May 2024 Series Starter book club pick Since this book won the Hugo for best Sci Fi, I was really surprised how much this felt like fantasy. Clearly, it occupies that middle ground of speculative fiction. It dragged a little at the beginning for me, but by about halfway I couldn't put it down - and the last 50 pages or so change everything. I IMMEDIATELY had to know what happens in the next two books in the series. Readers should note that this book leaves you at a cliffhanger, so be ready to read the whole series. Content Warnings for the Book: Child death, Moderate to Graphic sexual content, light non-human cannibalism
